Helo with dog training.....?
I have a 55 pound pitbull. He is friendly and calm when just around those he knows. However, when around new people, new surroundings, and new dogs, he gets so overly excited and anxious he is out of control and hard to handle. Specifically he is hard to control on a leash, he jumps on people not to bite , and gets himself so worked up he cant stop panting. I was wondering if anyone had any tips or suggestions on how to correct these behaviors as I am leaving for school in the fall and want to take him with me however it would be a handful if he behaves like this everyday. Thanks.

I'm skeptical about the dog training program that i'm about to go with?
I found this website called abetterdogtrainingtexas.com and i'm about to have them train my dogs. I have two big dogs and they would train them both for one price. One of my dogs has bitten someone and in order to keep him I have to get him training. this was ordered by the city but i was going to do that anyway . The training costs 400 dollars and it would include four lessons that are a couple of hours long each. I guess i'm just a little scared to go with them because its a lot of money and I want to make sure its going to work. I live in texas obviously. Has anyone ever heard of this training program and used it? If not go to the site and let me know what you think. Im kinda scared to do it also because my husband is in iraq and I know he probably wouldn't approve of the price....but after Jake bit someone we both agreed that we wanted to keep him and do anything we had to to keep him. and they would train my other dog Buddy as well. advice? opinions? No rude answers please. I'm not skeptical about getting him training...i'm just a little worried about going with this particular program. One more thing, they work with " aggressive" dogs who have bitten before.

Do some people have magic dog training wands or does everyone pay for doggy school?
Sooooooo..................i have the time and i want my dog to learn a million things I have had her a week, she is a teenager and terrified of people. I am starting with small things like sit, down, come etc.....and loving her and spoiling her. I hear of SO many ppl who train their own dogs and do a GREAT job. Those home schooled pups can do all kinds of tricks And some of those smarties have been rescued from shelters and pounds and were 6 yrs old before learning a thing So i have a teen, im taking things one day at a time with her. Is it possible for ME to teach her all those awesome tricks? Or do i have to take her to doggy school? Do i have to buy dog training books and dvds? Do some people have a magical touch with dogs and others just don't? If i work with her everyday will i get results? Am i just dreaming that i can do it on my own and i will have a dog who knows 100 tricks. Does it depend on the dog? i would imagine it is all about the trainer, not the dog. And i want to spend the time with her and teach her myself and not have to spend the extra cash on doggy school.i should add when i meant tricks, i mean things like to always come when called, to obey when i say stop as she might be getting into harms way ect....not the " go get me a soda" but those tricks do sounds fun. I am sure i will have a few silly tricks for her to do also, but for the most part i am concerned for her safety. also, i understand the great things about doggy classes, but what price range am i looking at?

Help in dog training!?
I rescued a Pomeranian mix from the pound. He was a stray so they didn't have any background info on him. His estimated age is 1 2 years old and his name is Max. Max has trouble learning commands or most likely I'm not training him correctly. I'm pretty sure he knows I'm the pack leader because he always waits for me to go through the door first and always walks by my side and not in front of me. The only command he understands is 'No.' Otherwise he doesn't even look up at me when I say his name or looks confused when I try to teach him a basic command like 'sit.' I don't repeat the word over and over and I keep the training sessions short. He isn't motivated by kibble, treats, or any foods or even his toys. I'm on a really tight budget and can't afford a trainer or group classes right now. Also, he doesn't do well wit other dogs. He won't lunge at other dogs during walks or anything. But, if one approaches him he'll start growling.I'd really appreciate some helpful advice

A good dog training book?
I have 4 different types of dogs. 3 are mixed breeds and 1 is a dachshund. The dachshund is trained already. The other 3 I need some suggestions. I have 2 outside that I need to be trained to guard the property and I have one that is inside to guard the inside of the house. If it helps I know that Furby is mixed with Great Pyrenees and we think Australian Shepherd, Bully is a mixed bull mastiff. The inside guard dog is a mixed Collie. Any suggestions anyone would have will be greatly appreciated. These suggestions will also be used during my volunteer time at the local pet rescue center. Thanks.

Dog Training: Koehler Method vs. Treats/Clicker Method?
Which do you think is more effective? I think the Koehler Method is far more effective than the Treats Clicker " Positive Reinforcement" Method. IMO, dogs need to know how to be submissive, and needs to know consequences for bad behavior, but not abuse, just proper corrections. And of course lots of petting and praise for good behavior. IMO, the whole new age " politically correct" treats clicker training is not nearly as effective.Opinions?
